Hemlock in its natural wooded settingCanadian Hemlock

Tsuga canadensis--Canadian Hemlock

Hardiness Zones: 3 to 7
Height: 55 ft
Spread: 30 ft
Form: pyramidal
Type: narrow-leaved evergreen tree
Annual Growth Rate: 12 to 18 inches

Comments: Canadian Hemlock may be one of the most beautiful conifers with its soft, green needles attached to arching branches. Canadian hemlock is tolerant of shearing and can be used in large, sheared screens. While it is native to Michigan, the hemlock seems to be intolerant of a combination of high-pH soil, poor drainage or excessive watering, and hot summer temperatures. We see poor survival rates in much of  Genesee and Oakland Counties for this reason. Soil type and other surroundings should be carefully considered
when using Hemlock.
