potted or balled Christmas tree care
In many parts of the country, people celebrate Christmas with a living tree. The roots are kept in a "ball" of earth. The ball can be wrapped in burlap or set into a biodegradable container or pot. The tree may be added to the landscape after the holidays.
Our living Christmas trees will be available starting around December 10. To use a living Christmas tree successfully, please observe the following points:
-
When picking up your live tree, bring a burlap tarp or
other breathable fabric to cover your tree (not a "poly" tarp,
as these will whip and damage the buds).
-
The tree should be stored for at least a day in an unheated, sheltered area such as a garage or porch, out of the wind and sun. Do not expose the tree's roots to freezing temperatures.
-
The tree will need adequate water. The root ball or soil should be kept slightly damp but not flooded. Place the tree in a tub while it is in the house.
-
Live trees may be decorated, but with care. If lights are used, they must not give off any heat.
-
Remove the tree from the house after seven days to prevent new growth from sprouting.
-
Do not remove the tree directly from a warm house out into below-freezing temperatures. Instead, move to a sheltered area first for a day.
-
If the ground is unfrozen, the tree may be replanted. The spot to be dug may be mulched to prevent
freezing. Plant as soon as
possible.
Follow the instructions on our landscaping tips page.
-
Where ground is already frozen, roots can be protected
from freezing with mulch. Apply any organic mulch material (wood chips,
bark, straw, etc) to the root ball in a wide, insulating mound for the
rest of the winter.
Most years we have live Christmas trees available on or
after the second week of December. Please call for availability!
